Purim is a time for month-long fun all over Israel! Adults put on silly ears, hats, and costumes as soon as the month of Adar begins. You can see them in shops, at work or behind the wheel of a car. College students dress up for class and so some of their instructors!
Elementary schools parade little children dressed as glittering, colorful royalty, super heroes, cartoon characters and whatnot through local neighborhoods as the music of Purim songs fill the air. Parents, friends and neighbors stand outdoors or at their windows, clapping along to the music or waving at the children making their way around the block.
Bakeries sell Oznay Haman, the flavorful triangle pastries filled with cremes, jellies, berries, whatever a creative home or professional baker wants to include, weeks before the holiday begins. Adar is a Purim-Palooza packed with silly fun. Yad Ezra V’Shhulamit has a part in all that.
At Yad Ezra V’Shulamit, we sponsor costume contests, mask-making workshops and singalongs as smiling little ones dance to the fun. We also add to the month-long merriment by filling baskets of Mishlokhay Manot (Shalakh Manos) with far more than the sugary sweets expected at this time of year.
On Purim day, Yad Ezra V’Shulamits colorful gift baskets filled with canned soups, vegetables and meat for a proper Purim seuda (celebratory meal) go to our recipients. Wrapped in colorful, shinning cellophane tied with shining ribbons, the baskets add to the fun. They ensure that no one will be ashamed of not being able to afford the central Purim meal. Even that small holiday feast is a daunting expense for the families that we help.
You can share the joy and pleasure of an Israeli Purim by helping Yad Ezra V’Shulamit with your donation. Put smiles on sad faces. Put bigger smiles on happy faces!
