Rosh Hashanah: Bringing the Joy of the Holiday to Families in Need

Aug 25, 2026

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is a time of reflection and judgment. As we prepare for the year ahead, we look back on the year that has passed, take stock of our lives, and think about the year to come. We pray for a year filled with health, peace, and blessing, and come together with family to celebrate with festive holiday meals and welcome the New Year.

Families gather around the Rosh Hashanah table to enjoy traditional and symbolic foods. Apples and honey represent the hope for a sweet new year, while challah, wine, meat, and other traditional foods are part of the holiday meals. Sharing these meals with family is an integral part of the Rosh Hashanah celebration.

However, for families facing financial hardship, preparing a holiday meal can be a significant challenge. When a household is already struggling to afford basic necessities, there may be little left to purchase the extra food needed for the holidays.

Helping Families Welcome the New Year

At Yad Ezra V’Shulamit, we believe that every family should be able to welcome the New Year with a festive meal and the opportunity to celebrate together.

Our volunteers and supporters prepare and distribute thousands of holiday food baskets to families and individuals throughout Israel. These baskets help ease the financial burden of the holidays and ensure that those facing hardship have the food they need to prepare a meaningful Rosh Hashanah meal.

For an elderly person living alone, a holiday basket can bring comfort and the knowledge that someone cares. For parents struggling to provide for their children, it can provide much-needed relief and allow them to focus on sharing the holiday with their family.

Every basket helps create a holiday table filled with food, warmth, and hope.

A Holiday Table Filled With More Than Food

Rosh Hashanah: Bringing the Joy of the Holiday to Families in Need
For 83-year-old widow named Rina, who lives alone in Bat Yam, even the simplest holiday foods can be difficult to afford. Living on a fixed pension, there is little left after paying for her basic expenses.

“Without a food basket, my Rosh Hashanah table would be empty,” Rina shared.

Her experience is shared by thousands of elderly, widows, Holocaust survivors, and families throughout Israel who are struggling to make ends meet. For them, a holiday food basket can make the difference between an empty table and a festive meal.

A Rosh Hashanah basket from Yad Ezra V’Shulamit is filled with the foods families need to celebrate the holiday, including apples and honey, challah, chicken, fish, grape juice, fresh produce, and other essential ingredients for preparing traditional holiday meals.

These baskets provide more than food. They bring the joy of the holiday into homes where financial hardship might otherwise make it difficult to celebrate.

Bringing Sweetness to the New Year

Rosh Hashanah is a time to wish one another a year filled with health and happiness. At Yad Ezra V’Shulamit, we want those blessings to reach families who are facing some of life’s greatest challenges.

With the help of our generous supporters, we can provide thousands of holiday baskets to those who need it most across Israel. Together, we can help ensure that no one has to face the New Year with an empty table.

As we prepare to welcome the year ahead, let us also remember those who may be struggling and help bring sweetness to their Rosh Hashanah table. Together, we can help ensure that families and individuals throughout Israel can celebrate the New Year with food, warmth, and hope.

May you and your family be showered with blessing and abundance in the coming year.
