Ethiopian-Israeli Families Facing Poverty: Supporting Families and Building Hope

Jul 30, 2026

The Challenge of Poverty in Israel

While Israel is known for innovation, growth, and technological achievements, many people face a very different reality. As the cost of living continues to rise, countless families struggle with financial hardship and find it difficult to meet even their most basic needs.

Over 2.5 million people in Israel live below the poverty line, including approximately 1.1 million children. Israel has one of the highest poverty rates among OECD countries, while also being ranked among the most expensive countries in the world in which to live. For families already facing financial struggle, the cost of necessities such as food, housing, and childcare can create enormous challenges.

When families do not have enough income to cover their needs, the impact is felt most deeply by children. Some children go without nutritious meals, while others are forced to miss meals entirely. No child should have to worry about whether there will be enough food at home.

Ethiopian-Israeli Families Facing Additional Challenges

Among the communities affected by poverty in Israel are Ethiopian-Israeli families. Since their arrival in Israel, Ethiopian Jews have worked hard to build new lives, establish communities, and contribute to Israeli society. However, many families continue to face economic challenges that make it difficult to achieve long-term financial stability.

Some Ethiopian-Israeli families experience barriers to employment and economic advancement, including difficulties related to education, language, and social integration. These challenges can make it more difficult for families to find stable employment opportunities and provide their children with the resources they need to thrive.

Behind every statistic is a family doing its best to succeed. Parents want to provide for their children, children want the opportunity to grow and learn, and communities want to support one another. With the right support, families can overcome challenges and build a stronger future.

Bringing Food and Support to Families in Need

At Yad Ezra V’Shulamit, we believe that every family deserves to have nutritious food on the table and the dignity of knowing that their community cares.

Every week, Yad Ezra V’Shulamit assist thousands of families throughout Israel, including hundreds of Ethiopian-Israeli families. Through our network of food distribution centers and dedicated volunteers, we help ensure that families have access to fresh, nutritious food.

Our support extends beyond weekly food baskets. Throughout the year, we help families meet other essential needs by providing warm winter clothing, back-to-school supplies, and holiday food packages. These programs help ease some of the financial pressures families face while ensuring that children have the clothing, school supplies, and nutritious meals they need to thrive.

Every food basket represents more than a box of groceries. Every act of support represents care, compassion, and the knowledge that a family is not facing difficult times alone. For parents struggling to provide for their children, knowing that they have help with food, clothing, or school supplies can bring both practical relief and renewed hope.

Building a Stronger Community Together

Supporting families living in poverty requires more than meeting immediate needs. It requires compassion, understanding, and a commitment to helping people build a better future.

Yad Ezra V’Shulamit works every day to support families throughout Israel, regardless of their background or circumstances. Our mission is to provide not only food, but also hope and encouragement to families who need a helping hand.

Together, through the generosity of our supporters, volunteers, and community partners, we can continue helping families across Israel overcome challenges and build a brighter future.
