Every Orphan Deserves to Walk to the Chuppah with Dignity

Jun 23, 2026

Spring is a season of renewal, hope, and one of the busiest times of year for weddings. Countless couples prepare to stand under the chuppah and begin building their future together.

For most families, wedding planning is filled with excitement. But for an orphan, the road to the chuppah often looks very different.

An Orphan Bride’s Wish

Recently, a young kallah (bride) reached out to us with a story that has stayed in our hearts.

As a little girl, her family was turned upside down almost overnight. Her mother suffered a devastating stroke that left her unable to care for herself, while her father dedicated every waking moment to looking after her. Eventually, the burden became too much. He suffered from severe heart failure and suddenly passed away, leaving behind six young children and a mother who was completely dependent on others.

Within a few short years, she lost both of her parents.

She spent her childhood moving through foster care and boarding schools, relying on the kindness of people who stepped in when there was nowhere else to turn.

Today, she is preparing for one of the happiest days of her life.

Like every bride, she dreams of walking toward her chuppah with excitement. Yet instead of choosing flowers or making guest lists with her parents, she faces the painful reality of having no way to pay for the wedding.

Her wish is for a simple wedding. To make this a reality, she turned to us for help.

A Groom’s Hope

A young chatan (groom) came to our office in tears and left a handwritten letter explaining his situation. He lost his father suddenly one Rosh Hashanah after what had seemed like a perfectly ordinary Yom Tov meal. In a single moment, life changed forever.

Now engaged to be married, he can’t picture the chuppah. All he sees are the overwhelming costs of a wedding and furnishing a small apartment.

“Every shekel” he manages to save “is like a drop in the ocean.”

While other couples are surrounded by parents helping them prepare, he worries about whether they will have the basics needed to begin married life.

Yet despite everything he has endured, his letter to us is filled with hope.

He believes that with a little help, he can build a warm Jewish home filled with love, faith, and new beginnings.

The Gift of a Joyful Wedding

Unfortunately, there are many others facing a similar situation.

These stories remind us that behind every wedding is so much more than a celebration. It is the chance to rebuild after unimaginable loss. It is proof that tragedy does not have to define a person’s future.

These orphans simply want to begin married life with the same dignity and joy that every couple deserves.

In their letters to us, both expressed overwhelming gratitude. The groom wrote that Yad Ezra V’Shulamit has been “the only wall for him to lean on” since the tragedy. He turns to us not as a charity organization, but as family. The bride doesn’t want anything fancy, just a simple wedding.

Helping Build New Homes

At Yad Ezra V’Shulamit, we have the privilege of standing beside orphaned brides and grooms during one of life’s most meaningful moments. Through discreet assistance with wedding expenses, household essentials, and practical support, we help ensure that these young couples can begin married life with dignity and confidence.

None of this would be possible without the generosity of our donors. Their compassion transforms difficult beginnings into joyful celebrations. Every contribution helps another orphaned bride or groom take the first steps toward building a loving Jewish home.
