The Lasting Impact of a Yizkor Pledge

May 25, 2026

Shavuot is one of the four times each year when those who have lost a parent, spouse, sibling, or child recite the special Yizkor prayer. During this emotional moment, the congregation stands together for the deeply meaningful memorial prayer, honoring loved ones who continue to be remembered and cherished.

As the Yizkor prayers are recited, many people pledge to give donations in memory of loved ones who have passed away. While the prayer itself lasts only a short time, the impact of those pledges continues long after the holiday ends.
For many families across Israel, those donations become food on the table, support during difficult times, and the comfort of knowing they are not alone.

Turning Memory Into Meaning

Shavuot celebrates the giving of the Torah, when the Jewish people stood together as one nation at Mount Sinai. Because Shavuot is a time of spiritual closeness and unity, it naturally becomes a moment when we also reflect on those who are no longer with us.

Yizkor is a prayer of remembrance, love, and connection. For generations, giving tzedakah during Yizkor has been a meaningful way to honor those who are no longer here while helping those who are struggling today. This custom reflects a powerful Jewish idea that even after someone passes away, their memory can continue bringing goodness into the world. Acts of kindness performed in their merit become part of their legacy.

Supporting Israel’s Most Vulnerable

At Yad Ezra V’Shulamit, Yizkor pledge donations help support some of Israel’s most vulnerable.

These include widows trying to support their families alone, orphans in need of stability and care, struggling families unable to afford basic necessities, Holocaust survivors living on extremely limited incomes, and elderly individuals choosing between food, medication, and utilities.

Many of the families receiving assistance are working hard just to get through the month. Others are facing illness, loss, unemployment, or financial crises that left them unable to manage on their own. For these families, community support is not just helpful but it is essential.

Turning Remembrance Into Real Help

Every donation made through a Yizkor pledge is transformed into practical assistance for families throughout Israel. Food packages, weekly distributions, holiday support, and emergency assistance help restore dignity and bring relief to people facing difficult circumstances.

Across 95 distribution points throughout Israel, Yad Ezra V’Shulamit works to ensure that vulnerable individuals and families are cared for with compassion and respect.

For a struggling parent, that support may mean being able to prepare meals for their children. For an elderly survivor living alone, it may mean not having to choose between buying medicine or groceries. For a widow or orphan, it can provide stability during an overwhelming time.

A Legacy That Continues

One of the most meaningful parts of Yizkor is the reminder that the people we love continue to influence the world through the values they passed on to us.

When someone gives tzedakah in memory of a loved one, their legacy becomes connected to every family helped, every meal distributed, and every person supported through that kindness.

Long after the holiday has ended, the impact of those Yizkor pledges continues reaching homes across Israel.

Carrying the Spirit of Shavuot Forward

Shavuot celebrates unity, responsibility, and the giving of the Torah to the Jewish people together. The spirit of the holiday does not end when Yom Tov is over. It continues through the ways we care for one another afterward.

The generosity shown through Yizkor pledges reflects that shared responsibility and strengthens the people who need it most.

May the kindness done in memory of loved ones continue to bring comfort, dignity, and hope to families throughout Israel.
