Northern Israel After the Evacuation: A City Returned, But Not Recovered
Nov 30, 2025
Setting the Scene
In Northern Israel, communities such as Kiryat Shmona and many smaller towns near the Lebanese border, were deeply affected when evacuation orders were issued in the war that followed the October 7th attacks by Hamas.
When residents of northern Israel were finally allowed to return to Kiryat Shmona after nearly two years of evacuation, many imagined a homecoming filled with relief and a sense of renewal. Instead, what they found was a city still deeply wounded not just by missile fire, but by absence, economic collapse, and despair.
Yet, amid these challenges, something powerful is taking shape. A growing effort to restore life, stability, and hope to Israel’s North, one family at a time.
A City Searching for Its Heartbeat
Before the war, Kiryat Shmona was filled with movement and energy. Children played in parks, young families filled local schools, and small businesses created the pulse of daily life.
Today, the city feels very different. Many of the families who evacuated have not yet returned, leaving streets quieter and public spaces emptier than anyone remembers. Older residents make up much of the returning population.
But those who have returned are determined. They open their shutters each morning, sweep the dust from their shopfronts, and take one more step toward rebuilding the city they love.
Businesses Working to Reopen
Across Kiryat Shmona, closed storefronts and “For Rent” signs tell the story of a local economy trying to recover. Many shops remain dark, and even the city’s main mall, once a bustling center of life, has only a fraction of its former visitors.
Yet signs of resilience are everywhere. Merchants are reopening their doors, even if only to keep a presence on the street. Community members stop by to encourage one another. Volunteers arrive to help clean, sort, and organize. Each small effort becomes part of a much bigger journey toward renewal.
The housing market reflects the same challenges, with hundreds of empty apartments waiting for returning families. But with the right support, these homes can once again be filled with life, laughter, and possibility.
The Weight and Strength the Residents Carry
Returning residents face daily uncertainty. Many are rebuilding businesses, navigating losses, or caring for children who have lived through prolonged displacement. The emotional toll is real and so is the strength that emerges from it.
Community members speak often about their commitment to staying, rebuilding, and creating a future for the next generation. Their perseverance is remarkable. What they need now is partnership and support to help them bridge the gap between hardship and recovery.
Where Yad Ezra V’Shulamit Steps In: Rebuilding Begins with Food
As families work to regain stability, one need stands above all: food security.
With so many local jobs still unavailable and businesses struggling, hundreds of families in Kiryat Shmona are turning to Yad Ezra V’Shulamit for help. To meet this urgent need, our organization has launched a large-scale effort to provide weekly food baskets to 400 families in the city.
These baskets include fresh fruits, vegetables, bread, chicken, and other essentials to feed an entire family for a week.
For families navigating the uncertainty of rebuilding, these food baskets offer more than nutrition, they bring stability, dignity, and renewed hope.
Every delivery is a reminder that they are not alone. That people across Israel and around the world are standing with them as they rebuild their lives.
A Future Still Full of Promise
Despite the difficulties, Kiryat Shmona is a city with extraordinary heart. Neighbors encourage each other. Volunteers show up day after day. And families continue to return, believing in the city’s promise and refusing to give up on it.
With the right support, Kiryat Shmona can once again become a vibrant, thriving community filled with children’s laughter, active streets, and families rebuilding stronger than before.
