Against All Odds: Chana and David’s Wedding Story
Jun 30, 2025
For many young couples in Israel, planning a wedding is a dream filled with excitement, love, and hope for the future. But for orphans and those living in poverty, that dream can feel painfully out of reach. The celebration that should mark the beginning of a new life together can be overshadowed by overwhelming financial burdens, the hall rentals, food, decorations, photography, costs that add up quickly.
Chana and David are a young couple in love, about to start their life together. Thanks to support from our donors, they are getting married today – June 26th, 2025 – in Jerusalem at our non-profit wedding hall.
Both Chana and David grew up without the safety net most couples rely on.
Chana’s father was diagnosed with terminal cancer and passed away when she was very young. Her mother, though full of warmth and strength, has struggled to provide a stable home on her own. She’s done everything she can to raise Chana with love, but when it comes to the wedding, she simply had nothing to give.
David’s story is just as painful. His father also passed away after a long illness, and his mother was left to care for the family while coping with Type 1 diabetes. Their home is one of quiet perseverance, but also of grief, debt, and barely enough food on the table.
That’s where Yad Ezra V’Shulamit steps in.
Through our Sponsor a Wedding program, we help ensure that couples like Chana and David can celebrate their union with dignity, joy, and the support of a caring community.
Why Wedding Sponsorships Matter
For struggling couples, a wedding is more than just a celebration. It’s a turning point, a moment of blessing, unity, and renewed hope. But when finances are tight, even the simplest celebration becomes unattainable. By sponsoring a wedding, donors lift this burden, allowing couples to rejoice surrounded by family and friends.
Each sponsored wedding covers the essentials: a hall, catering, a kallah chair, a chuppah, and simple decorations for an uplifting dignified wedding atmosphere. Sponsorship also includes vital home appliances to help the newlyweds start their life together.
Imagine how Chana feels when suddenly her wedding is paid for and she no longer has to spend sleepless nights thinking of how to afford the basics of her wedding. Imagine their friends dancing around them in celebration, instead of watching their love story quietly pass by because no one could afford to help.
These little things - napkins, centerpieces, a joyful atmosphere - are what make a wedding feel real. They’re what help a couple feel cared for and supported.
And it doesn’t end when the music stops. Chana and David will also get the tools to build a life together. That means a refrigerator, a washing machine, an oven—essentials for their new home. Things they can’t afford, but desperately need.
A Mitzvah That Echoes for Generations
Sponsoring a wedding isn’t just a kind gesture, it’s a powerful mitzvah. In Jewish tradition, the commandment of hachnasat kallah (helping a bride and groom marry) is one of the most beautiful forms of charity. The merit of bringing joy to a couple on their wedding day is immeasurable.
Sponsoring a wedding, is not just about providing a day of joy, but also help to establish a new Jewish home, shaping the future of generations to come. This act of kindness, a wedding with dignity, becomes a permanent part of their story, and their gratitude lasts forever.
