Immigrants During Times of War

Feb 08, 2024

In most corners of the world, a war-torn region is a place to leave. Not a place you’d consider choosing as your new home. Most countries which have been devastated by conflict in the past few years, such as Yemen, Somalia, Syria and Afghanistan, are also poor and economically underdeveloped. But even a country with a more advanced economy like Ukraine lost a significant percent of its population following the invasion by its neighbor.

Israel: Land of Immigrants

Immigrating to the land of Israel has been a sacred Jewish tradition since the start of the Diaspora. From the Aliyot of Jews from Babylon during the time of the first exile, through the immigration of Jews throughout the Middle Ages, and up to the Zionist Aliyot during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Despite being under deadly attack since the day of its inception, Israel has absorbed a number of immigrants many times the size of its original population, a feat unparalleled by any other country in the world. The immigrants- or Olim, "those who come up", as they are called in Israel- came from all over the world. They came from dozens of different countries, from all six continents. They came from rich countries and poor countries. They came speaking Yiddish, Arabic, Russian, English, Spanish, French, Amharic and many other languages.

On the surface, they sometimes had little in common with each other. However, in truth they shared the deepest connection possible: a deep love for Israel and a desire to make it their home.

Israel at War

Once again, Israel finds itself at war. Once again, there are immense challenges faced by those who have come back to their ancient homeland willingly.

It is not only the long-time residents, soldiers and civilians, in Israel who need support during this time. Immigrants need just as much assistance, if not more. The trials and tribulations that come with being an immigrant, navigating a country that might still be unfamiliar, with language barriers and differences in mentality, can be compounded by the burdens and tragedies of war. Resources and emotional reserves, which may have been already stretched thin before the war, can run dry due to increased demands, when faced with anxiety, uncertainty and trauma.

Yad Ezra V’shulamit provides assistance to those in need during the war. The help ranges from material assistance, such as store vouchers, to practical support for evacuees, such as activities for children. Our counselors provide emotional support to those affected by the war and refer to professionals when needed.

Some Ethiopian families who were evacuated due to the war are still new to Israel. Yad Ezra V’Shulamit provides Amharic-speaking lecturers and guides, in addition to providing Hebrew language instruction. Thus, these families can find safe and supportive spaces during such a challenging time.

We depend on your generous donations in order to continue our work. Join us today and help the newest immigrants in Israel to weather the storm. We are all in the same boat, and with faith and hope, we shall make it to the shore. Make your donation today and make a difference.
