How Many Coats Are Too Many? (These Kids Have None.)

Jan 24, 2024

You may have encountered this familiar situation: standing at your home's entrance, you desperately try to wedge a thick winter coat into an overstuffed closet, which is overflowing with jackets, scarves and hats. Once again, you wonder where you got those extra three coats which no one in the house uses.

Overflowing Closets and Unworn Clothes

Most people have far too many clothes. Survey results that show that American women have an average of $550 worth of unworn clothing sitting in their closets. Other polls show that people from all over the world have an average of 148 articles of clothing in their wardrobe, most of which they'll use only rarely, at best. The media is full of guides explaining how to declutter a closet, limit impulsive purchases and repurpose old items. It seems like an abundance of superfluous clothes is an epidemic in our society. Terms like 'Minimalism', 'Sustainable Fashion' and 'Capsule Wardrobe' are becoming more and more popular, encouraging us to become less wasteful and more mindful consumers.

Families in Need of Winter Clothing

However, not everyone is fortunate enough to deal with this problem. There are families in Israel today who cannot even buy proper winter clothing for their children. Due to various difficult and often tragic life circumstances, some parents find themselves having to choose between providing their kids with the next meal, paying the electricity bill or buying winter clothes. Their children might suffer in the cold, putting them at risk of developing a serious illness, or they might get some inadequate second-hand items – which might be old and worn, oversized or in an ill-fitting style.

You may know a family just like that, or it may seem like a distant story – something that only appears on the news. But any family can find themselves in such a situation. Think about how would you like to be treated, if you found yourself counting pennies instead of counting the extra items of clothing that fill the closet.

Do You Want to Help

Every child deserves to have a coat: a winter coat that is not only warm, but makes them feel loved and cared for.

This is where you can help. By making a donation to Yad Ezra V'shulamit, you can be part of our Winter Coat Project, and help us ensure that every child in Israel is properly clothed this winter. Any amount helps to contribute towards this goal. In addition to providing children with brand-new coats, Yad Ezra V'shulamit distributes boots, sweaters, heaters and warm blankets.

This year, as we open our cluttered closets and reorganize their contents, we shall open our hearts as well. While we find more storage space for our clothes, we will find more space in our minds to remember those in situations different than ours. We shall remind ourselves to not only be conscious and careful consumers, but also thoughtful and kind givers.

Our dream is to guarantee that every child in Israel is provided for this winter. Join us today and help make the dream a reality.
