The Hidden Victims: How War Traumatizes Israeli Children

Nov 13, 2023

The conflict between Israel and her enemies has raged for decades, with sporadic periods of increased intensity. Unfortunately, it's not just adults who bear the cost of this ongoing turmoil. While the political issues dominate headlines, we often overlook how the battles directly affect some of the most vulnerable - the children.

We'll shed light on the harsh realities Israeli children face through no fault of their own, and the very real toll the violence takes on their lives, health, and futures.

Psychological Trauma War Inflicts on Children

Exposure to violence and the threat of attacks takes a lot on anyone's mental health.

Hearing rocket sirens go off is terrifying for any kid. In an instant, they have to rush for shelter, wondering if this is the time a rocket makes it through Israel's Iron Dome. Some children have seen the damage rockets can cause firsthand.

Even when they aren't in direct danger, explosions and air raid sirens keep kids feeling on edge. Living with that constant fear takes a toll on their mental health.

Emotional Toll

It's no surprise many kids in Israel struggle with depression and anxiety because of this. One study found half of children in Sderot showed signs of PTSD. Nightmares about rockets and memories of attacks are common. Kids also have trouble concentrating at school as their minds wander to worries about safety.

Feeling sad or afraid so much of the time is exhausting for little ones. Some act out their anxieties through angry outbursts or bedwetting.

Long-term effects

While the immediate danger of attacks may end if a ceasefire holds, kids are left dealing with the psychological fallout for years. Trust is a big issue for many after losing friends to violence. Other common problems include difficulty with relationships as adults, or developmental delays if severe stress impacted childhood too much.

The trauma these children experience stays with them unless properly addressed. It influences how they see the world long-term unless given the support needed to heal.

Medical Impact of War-Related Injuries

Unfortunately, the Iron Dome can't intercept every rocket and many kids and adults get injured directly by explosions and shrapnel. During flare-ups, it's not uncommon to see young patients in the hospital ER with burns or broken bones.

Many of these children also suffer chronic health issues as if mental health problems weren't enough.

Thanks to rocket sirens constantly blaring, more kids in the area are developing anxiety attacks. Stress hormones released in the body may exacerbate respiratory issues, like irritable bowel syndrome or acid reflux. One 9-year-old girl in Ashdod even died of cardiac arrest caused by rocket sirens.

Keeping up with medical needs in these situations is challenging. Follow-up care and prescription refills are disrupted by attacks. This state of fear and uncertainty makes Israeli children pay a steep price in both mental and physical damage.

Do You Want to Help the War Victims?

The war has severe effects on both children and adults. And Yad Ezra V'Shulamit is one organization that has stood up for the victims. While rockets are raining down, we're out on the roads bringing hot meals, snacks, and supplies to everyone crammed into bomb shelters across Israel.

We're delivering truckloads of food and each truck can feed 200 families. Each truck costs us $26,000, and thanks to generous donors like you, we're up for this challenge. Please, head over to our war campaign page and chip in what you can. Every little bit will make a big difference for people going through a challenging time.

Spreading Smiles Amidst Crisis

The YadEzra Toy Distribution Project recognizes the plight of the many displaced children and families who were graciously taken in by hotels across Eilat, Jerusalem, and the Dead Sea due to the ongoing conflict. These children have been left with nothing to do, having left behind their cherished toys. We are determined to provide a ray of hope and healing by distributing new toys to 2,000 children in need, aiming to bring much-needed smiles to their faces. Join us in making a meaningful difference in the lives of these children who have been profoundly impacted by the ravages of war. Your support can help us provide a brighter and more joyful future for these young souls. You can donate here.
