Michali is a two year old girl just like any other: curious, energetic and adorable. But there is one way in which Michali is different from other two year olds: she recently underwent life-threatening surgery to receive a liver transplant, donated by her father.
Yad Ezra V’Shulamit was approached by Michali’s father a few weeks before the surgery; he could not get through a sentence without breaking down and crying. He managed to communicate the desperateness of the situation; the surgery could only be performed by doctors in Europe, and while Michali’s medical insurance in Israel covered the cost of the surgery; it did not cover the cost of flight expenses, room and board, food or the lost wages of her parents.
Yad Ezra V’Shulamit immediately launched a campaign to raise money for flights for Michali and her parents so that they could get to Europe for Michali’s surgery. Thanks to our generous donors from around the world, we succeeded.
Michali’s doctor performed successful surgery, and she and her father must now spend the next few months in Europe recovering. Her mother is by their sides to care for both of them, while her siblings remain in Israel under the care of family and friends. Despite the trauma of life-threatening surgery, Michali is showing incredible strength of spirit. She is a rambunctious two year old, who loves to laugh, and she gets enjoyment from the littlest things in life. Her parents are thrilled to see their daughter regaining some of her spirit, but know that there is still a long road of recovery ahead.
