All of the single mothers out there can surely understand this blog. Between working, taking care of the house, and looking after children, among many other things that single mothers are responsible for, life is not easy! The thought of how you are going to juggle everything at once is a nightmare in it of itself. And yet, single mothers worldwide take on the task fiercely and, for the most part and as much as they can, with dignity.
We’d like to touch on the last part of that sentence: dignity. Everyone should have the ability to take care of their children with dignity. But what happens when you can no longer do so? This, too, is a nightmare scenario that no one wants to think about. And yet, unfortunately, this happens all too often, the most recent of which was a family that turned to Yad Ezra V’Shulamit for help.
Thankfully, our organization has been able to help thousands of people from across Israel. Our most established function is our renowned Children’s Center. It’s so well known that there is a large waiting list. If there is an extreme situation, we consider these and move them to the top of the list. Thankfully, this doesn’t happen too often but when it does, we need to act fast. And that’s exactly what we did.
A mother with 5 children recently came to us, pleading for help. They live in a 45 square meter (apprx. 450 square foot), very old apartment, that is in a very bad state. She works full time and is still in very large debt. She desperately needs a place for the children to be, but cannot afford to pay an afternoon daycare. So, we took a look at the situation, saw the immediate need for intervention and went to work! Yad Ezra V’Shulamit now receives their girls and feeds them supper, and the girls play with their friends and do their homework until their mother arrives.
Stories like these are not uncommon. Our Children’s Center goes above and beyond for our community. The amount of time and resources that go into making this a reality are very high. If you’d like to learn more about our Children’s Center, you can do so here.
