There has been a lot of talk recently about how Jerusalem is slowly catching up to Tel Aviv regarding being labeled as a tech hub. New buildings are constantly being built in Jerusalem, and it is now being promoted as “the next big thing.” Yet, Jerusalem is widely considered one of the poorest cities in all of Israel, and you would never know it.

It may come as a bit of a shock to you but roughly 50% of Jerusalem’s residents live in complete poverty. Yes, you read that right. Whereas the country’s average is about 25% living in poverty, Jerusalem is double that. Jerusalem – the city of gold, the next tech hub, is battling to keep its residents dry, warm, and fed.

Israel has already picked up the infamous title of being the most poverty-ridden country in the Western hemisphere. That should just go to show you just how bad the situation is in Jerusalem, the capital city.

Worsening the situation is the government’s lack of a proper response. There are barely any state funded programs to help people break out of this terrible cycle. The ones that are up and running don’t have enough funding thanks to the many bureaucratic walls in place.

What We Do

While Yad Ezra V’Shulamit helps over 100,000 impoverished individuals throughout Israel, much of our work focuses on the Jerusalem area. What’s best is that we have been seeing great results! Our Children’s Center is packed, our Job Desk is constantly working, our baby programs are continually restocking supplies, and even our teens at risk initiatives are in full effect. Due to your incredibly generous donations, we are able to help a tremendous amount of people, most of whom reside in Jerusalem.

But, this means that our work is not done. We are working at full capacity while nearly all of our programs have waiting lists! Regrettably, we have to put many needy people on a waiting list.

Please consider making a donation so we can continue fighting poverty, specifically in the Jerusalem area.
